Integrated Pilaster Material

The normal wall block is already included in the base wall. Enter only the extra CMU required to build the thicker pilaster at each course.

Freestanding Column Material

If overall length is selected, the calculator subtracts the column widths from the base wall-panel length before calculating wall blocks.

Additional Material

Optional allowance for corners, cuts, half blocks, jamb units, bond-beam units or other specialty CMU.

Integrated pilasters add only the additional CMU beyond the normal wall plane. Freestanding columns are calculated separately from the wall panels. Actual bond patterns, corners, jambs and specialty units may change the final material quantities.

CMU Wall Reference

Nominal vs. Actual Block

Standard CMU layout uses nominal installed dimensions. A nominal 8 × 8 × 16 block is commonly approximately 7-5/8 × 7-5/8 × 15-5/8 inches before the mortar joint.

The approximately 3/8-inch mortar joint brings the installed module to about 8 inches high by 16 inches long.

Integrated Pilaster

An integrated pilaster is bonded into the wall. The normal wall face is already included in the base wall quantity.

The pilaster input therefore adds only the extra units required per pilaster per course, preventing the wall block from being counted twice.

Freestanding Column

A freestanding column is calculated separately from the wall panel. Enter the number of blocks used in one column for each course.

When the entered wall length includes the columns, select Overall Length Including Columns so their widths are deducted from the wall-panel length.

Support Spacing

Spacing mode places interior supports at the selected maximum spacing and allows either or both wall ends to contain a support.

This is a material-layout tool. It does not determine structurally required pilaster or column spacing.

Openings

Doors, windows and gates are deducted by their nominal opening area. Jambs, lintels, bond beams and cut units can cause the actual block usage to differ from the simple area deduction.

Next Masonry Calculations

The dedicated Columns / Pilasters tool will expand the support calculation into top-view geometry, block arrangement, filled cores and grout volume.

Grout / Core Fill, Mortar and Bond Beam / Rebar remain separate calculations so structural assumptions are not silently added to the block takeoff.
